Everything you need to know about climbing Mount Batur
This famous mountain in Bali is known for its incredible sunrise views, and is a must climb for all adventure seekers.
Arguably the most famous mountain on the island, you can join a sunrise trek up the volcano. The view at the top was spectacular, and watching the colours of the sky change as the sun came up was beautiful. HOWEVER they claim this climb is for all fitnesses, and I would argue it is NOT. This was probably the most exhausting climb of my life. With very unstable pathways, and lots of actual steel rock climbing, it’s a real test for your legs. The climb took roughly 2 hours up and 2 hours back down the other side.
I believe there are multiple ways to climb down the volcano, we took the quickest route, which was a steep gravel slope. This involved LOTS of slipping and sliding. You can pay for a dirt bike to take you down the mountain, but I’d argue this is just as dangerous. So take your time, and wear sensible shoes! Also take lots of water with you. There are ladies towards the top of the volcano offering you drinks if you come unstuck. There are also no toilets at the top, so don’t wait to go! Go for a wild wee before you reach the summit in the trees where no one can see you.
Where you begin the hike, you’ll be offered breakfast (some cold fried bananas and toast) which wasn’t very appealing so I’d bring your own cereal bar. The toilet here also isn’t a toilet, it’s a hole in the ground which hasn’t been cleaned in YEARS. So please do not go in there, and go for a wild wee once you start your climb. You’ll also be given a torch for the climb.
The mountain is usually busy this time of morning too, which was not helpful when you wanted to stop and catch your breath, but you just keep getting bashed by some overly eager climbers as they try and over take you.
